Choose a mouth without tartar
A tartar-free set of teeth is like a breath of fresh air. Tartar causes most oral problems, such as cavities, inflamed gums, tooth erosion and bad breath. The good news is that you can prevent tartar quite easily by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
How does someone get tartar?
Food residues, saliva and bacteria in the mouth form a sticky layer around your teeth and under the gums. That is dental plaque. If this transparent layer remains for a long time, it becomes hard tartar. This is often found in places that are not brushed properly. Once tartar is there, you can no longer brush it away yourself.
Have tartar removed
If during a check-up or consultation it appears that you have tartar in your teeth, the prevention assistant will remove it for you. Sometimes the dental hygienist or dentist does this. This can be done in two ways:
- with a hook;
- with a device that emits ultrasonic vibrations;
- with Airflow.
For children under the age of eighteen, treatment by the prevention assistant is free.
Final step: polishing
After the treatment your teeth will be polished. You will get some polishing paste on your teeth and a brush will do the work. Polishing removes deposits and makes the teeth shine again.
